Christmas 2019. I was so happy when Chris crafted a 3-dimensional star for our tree that was built out of old bass strings from a piano that was in for repair. I loved looking at it on the top of the tree and I will use it and cherish it for years to come. Then this year for Christmas 2020, Chris and Henry knocked it out of the park with their unexpected gift. They created a piece of art that can be used as a coat rack with perfect proportions for my front foyer. Let me tell you about it!
Every time I look at it, I think of the creative talent in the design along with the craftsmanship that went into executing such a piece. This brings me joy.
The coat rack was manufactured right here in our workshop, using all second-hand materials; this also brings me joy.
It conveniently hangs by our front door above our radiator. Any coat dries quickly and is warm when I put it on. Did I mention there are specific hooks for our dog leashes? This really brings me joy.
COVID-19 has affected everyone physically, emotionally, and economically. The speed with which so many of us small businesses were impacted was unprecedented and the attendant hardship is still felt today with so many for rent signs in Toronto. The lockdowns helped so many of us realize the ease with which one uses Amazon’s platform to purchase items. There has been a lot of talk about Jeff Bezos and the love/hate relationship Amazon created within society.
As a small business owner, with a brick and mortar space on Yonge Street in Toronto, we have spent an extraordinary amount of time and resources to try and move online. Trying to sell a piano with our doors shut to the public has not been easy. I know I am not alone as a small business owner, struggling to stay relevant and top of mind. Ranting will not get me anywhere; positive energy and forward-thinking are the best mindsets.
I have spent the past 6 months buying from anyone but Amazon, supporting neighbours and small businesses when I am able. This Christmas I literally received the perfect gift. A piece of art that is to be used as a coat rack, created from an upcycled piece of a piano, made with craftsmanship and love. Chris and Henry’s gift was and continues to be a remarkable symbol that helps keep my faith in both the future and of friendship. I will have it, need it, and use it for the rest of my life!
